COLLEGE STATION - After playing second fiddle to the DFW area the past three years, the Houston area in 2014 rose up and had maybe their best ever overall State Tournament on Saturday. The Houston area which hadn't won a title since Baytown Lee back in 2005, had a monster Saturday with three teams in the final four of the semi-final bracket and the consolation champion in Cy Falls. The big prize however went to lightly regarded (going into the tournament) Katy Seven Lakes, who went 8-0 for the tournament finishing it off with a dominating 42-25 win over surprising Whitehouse.

The Spartans who won their three pool games Friday, (one was close in a 33-32 win over Fort Worth South Hills) got a big test to start Saturday knocking off hometown favorite College Station A&M Consolidated 34-32. The Spartans then began a dominating four game run beating Wichita Falls, Hutto, Manvel and Whitehouse by an average of 28 points per game. The most impressive feat may have been the Spartans 48-26 demolition of previously undefeated Manvel. The Mavericks had come off two drubbings of top DFW teams in Arlington Bowie and Allen prior to their loss to the Spartans.

Whitehouse had a strong run to reach the title game as the Wildcats started off with a pair of one point wins over Houston Stratford and Mesquite Horn before facing Tyler John Tyler in an East Texas Quarter-Final showdown. The Wildcats and Lions had met several times in league play and after trailing 19-13 at the half, Whitehouse had a monster second half to knock off the Lions 40-31. Whitehouse's run to the finals was the deepest an East Texas team had gone at the State Tournament since Tyler Lee won it in 2004.

Cy Falls, who missed out on the championship bracket via a tiebreaker, finished the tournament 7-1 as they won the consolation bracket. The Eagles got back to back overtime wins in the semi-finals (over Carrollton Creekview) and finals (over College Station) to take home consolation honors. The DFW area had won the last three seven on seven titles and before that Austin took home three straight titles.
