TYLER - It was a day for Smith County teams to take center stage as Tyler Lee and Whitehouse both punched tickets to the 2014 Texas Sate 7 on 7 Tournament Saturday afternoon at Lindsey Park. Tyler Lee was impressive on the day posting a 4-0 mark and in their first three games, the Red Raiders rolled winning games by margins of 53, 47 and 27 points respectively. The Red Raiders had to get past old rival Longview in the semi-finals winning a back and forth affair 34-33. The winning margin was provided by WR Juwan Banks who hauled in the touchdown to tie the game at 33 from junior QB Zach Hall, Banks also got the winning PAT to give Lee the 34-33 lead which they held as Longview went three and out on their final drive.
Whitehouse advanced to the State Tournament for the third straight year as the Wildcats put together a strong 4-0 record, but it wasn't without challenges. The Wildcats opened the day with a hard fought 37-32 win over a very tough and athletic Lancaster squad. Whitehouse then in the semi-finals had to hang on for a 50-41 win over Lufkin in a high scoring affair.
Crockett, which hadn't lost a 7 on 7 game all summer lost their first two games of the summer to Lancaster and Tyler Lee respectively.
