WYLIE - In two of the better semi-final games you'll see at a 7 on 7 State Qualifier, the Wylie Pirates and Denison Yellowjackets both qualified for the State 7 on 7 Tournament Friday night at Wylie Stadium. Wylie, which qualified for the tenth time got it done with an outstanding come from behind 31-28 win over rival Wylie East. The Pirates, who trailed 28-19 with four minutes left scored to cut the lead to 28-25, and then quickly forced an East three and out to set up their winning drive. After seeing a touchdown wiped out on a close four second call, the Pirates didn't panic and at the horn, QB Carsen Cook hooked up with WR Jordan Whaley for the game winning score and a Wylie victory. Wylie East played very well despite the semi-final loss, advancing out of a tough pool with back to back overtime wins over Rowlett and Hebron.
Denison on the other hand is still new at this whole 7 on 7 thing and after getting close last week and losing in the semi-finals at Plano West broke through this week. The 'Jackets started out slowly getting down by fourteen points early in their first game to Dallas Jesuit but battled back for a 50-37 win. After knocking off North Mesquite and Arlington Martin, Denison moved to the semi-finals against high powered Sachse. In a back and forth affair, that saw Sachse tie the game up as time expired, Denison rallied in overtime. Sachse got the ball first and on fourth and goal, the Denison defense got an interception to set up the 'Jackets just needing a score to win. After getting a pass interference penalty on fourth and goal, Dension QB Devon Blanton hooked up with RB Cody Crause out of the backfield for the game winning score. Blanton, known more for his running was pinpoint with his accuracy and Denison's receivers like Devon Patterson and Chance Rogers had big days along with Crouse.
