2013 7 on 7 State Championships Day Two Recap

LEANDER - Day two of the 2013 Adidas Texas State 7 on 7 Championships was filled with a ton of drama and some of the top high school football players in the country going at it in brutal July heat.

In bracket play of the Division II tournament, Graham took home a thrilling 33-31 victory over Argyle to win the Division II crown. The Steers had to hold on late as Argyle's Ian Sadler nearly came down with a miracle touchdown reception as time expired that would have given Argyle the title. The Steers battled through a tough bracket knocking off powers Burnet and Gilmer in back to back difficult contests. Carthage won their second consolation title in the past four years as they dominated going 5-0 and not playing a game closer than nine points.

DIVISION I RECAP

In Division I, the talent that showed up for the state tournament is always eye popping and once again the teams didn't disappoint with some fantastic action. Lake Travis and Arlington Bowie cruised through Pool's A & B, with LT getting it done with a solid defense and Bowie topping 50 points twice in pool play. Pool C may have had the strangest games with Hutto beating pre-tournament #1 Mesquite Horn in a huge upset and then in one of the stranger scores you'll ever see Hutto knocked off San Angelo Central 9-7.

The "Pool of Death" lived up to its billing as some of the most entertaining games were played on that side. Lufkin and Katy played a thriller with Lufkin coming out on top 34-32. Cedar Hill took an early lead on Katy and nearly avenged their state football loss, but Katy answered with a late rally to win 30-27. Houston Lamar rolled through a pretty salty Pool F and may have been the most impressive team on the entire afternoon. Abilene Cooper lost out on a crazy tiebreaker in Pool G with Cy Fair and Justin Northwest. The three teams tied at 2-1, the first tiebreaker is total points and in that scenario Abilene Cooper and Cy Fair both finished with 78 points. The next tiebreak is points allowed and Cy Fair had the edge there, thus earning the one seed. With Cooper and Northwest left standing, Northwest advanced based on the head to head win over Abilene Cooper.

Southlake Carroll quietly went 3-0, but the Dragons looked mighty impressive they could be a team to watch Saturday. Pool's I and J had surprise winners as Cy Ranch and El Paso Montwood advanced as top seeds from these groups. Austin Bowie and Mesquite Poteet played the game of the day in Pool L, with Bowie scoring a late touchdown at the horn to win the pool over Poteet 40-37. Abilene High finished 1-2 in Pool M along with Round Rock Westwood and Pearland Dawson and AHS lost out on this tiebreaker at points scored to Westwood making Abilene 0-2 on tiebreakers for the day.

San Antonio O'Connor lived up to their billing as a tournament contender with an impressive 3-0 afternoon in a tough pool. DeSoto had little trouble in Pool P winning their three games by 14, 22 and 16 points rescpectively.
