NB Canyon's Cougars Stadium goes red (turf)

New Braunfels Canyon has installed a bright red artificial turf at Canyon Stadium. It makes its competitive debut Tuesday night with a varsity soccer scrimmage.

Canyon will then host the Comal Cup Soccer Tournament this Thursday-Saturday. In the tradition of doing something different like Boise State's blue turf which helped distinguish the program's blossoming football program a decade ago.Hilalgo in South Texas has a blue turf.

Comal ISD athletic director Jim Rodrigue, told the Herald Zeitung the new, improved rubber-fiber turf is "as forgiving as grass."

The bright red color is a good match for Canyon's school colors at Cougar Stadium. Smithson Valley (school color blue) and Canyon Lake (gold) have colored end zones, but opted to go with traditional green playing fields on their stadiums in the $800,000 turf upgrade at the Comal stadiums.

Eastern Washington installed a new red turf this season and it was a good omen. Led by Katy QB Bo Levi Mitchell, Eastern Washington won the FCS (I-AA) title last week in Frisco.
