MANSFIELD - Often times a team can point to a single moment when their season was made and for the Mansfield Legacy Broncos (4-0, 1-0) it came early in the third quarter of their game Thursday night at Newsom Stadium. Trailing 30-14, the Broncos defense was in desperate need of a big play to turn their game around against Lancaster (1-3, 0-1). They got it in the form of a huge hit on LHS QB Chris Thomas, Thomas fumbled and Legacy LB Everett Williams was right there to scoop the ball up and score on a 19 yard return to cut the lead to 30-20.
The hit would cause Thomas to miss most of the third quarter and that totally changed the momentum of the game as Legacy would score a total of thirty straight points to win 44-30. Williams would add a second defensive touchdown later in the quarter as he recovered a fumble in the end zone which would tie the game at 30 apiece. Legacy RB Kijana Amous would add two scoring runs in the fourth quarter which proved to be the eventual margin needed in the Broncos win, Amous was a workhorse for Legacy with 37 carries for 167 yards and three touchdowns.
Legacy started out a little shaky early on as the Broncos had turnovers on their first two series of the game. But after getting an interception of their own, the Broncos began to make some headway against the Lancaster defense. On the first play of the second quarter, Legacy would take a 7-0 lead on a one yard run by Amous. Lancaster would respond on their next series as Thomas would hook up with Tim Taylor on a 23 yard catch and run, the PAT failed and Legacy led 7-6. After a short kickoff set Legacy up with great field position the Broncos would march 55 yards and score on a one yard run by backup RB Kenton Mayberry to put Legacy back up 14-6.
Lancaster would go to halftime with big time momentum scoring 16 points in a matter of ten seconds to take a 22-14 lead into the locker room. With 54 seconds left in the half, facing a 4th and 8 on the Legacy 23 Thomas would hook up with Nick Alexander for a 23 yard touchdown pass. After Thomas completed the two point pass to Taylor the game was tied at 14. Disaster struck Legacy on the next play as they fumbled the ensuing kickoff, it was picked up by Halston Lilly who galloped 17 yards for the score and after the two point run by Thomas, Lancaster led a stunned Legacy squad 22-14.
The turnover bug would strike Mansfield Legacy right out of the locker room as the Broncos would fumble on their first play. Lancaster would need just four plays to score on Rashaun O'Neal one yard run. Thomas would hook up with Mark Mims on the two point pass giving Lancaster a 30-14 lead. From that point on Legacy would completely dominate the game. Thomas would return early in the fourth quarter but Lancaster would never seriously threaten again the remainder of the night.
Next week Legacy will look to go 2-0 in district play as they visit Red Oak, while Lancaster will host Waxahachie.
