November 6, 2009 AUSTIN- By defeating the Austin Lanier Vikings (1-8, 1-4), Austin Crockett (3-6, 2-3) won a virtual playoff game 34-0, as the winner of the game would have sown up the final playoff spot in District 26-4A."(The coaches) talked to the kids about treating (the game) as a playoff game," Crockett coach John Waugh said. " We really started getting in that mindset last week by going on the road to Houston (Milby)." "(The win) is big," senior receiver Ryan Vaughn said. "This is the first time in our school's history that we've gone to the playoffs back-to-back." The current Crockett team is used to firsts, as last year's team was the first in history to win a district championship. Crockett dominated all aspects of the game, allowing just two first downs before the fourth quarter, while sustaining backbreaking drives, the longest of which spanned fifteen plays, ninety-two yards, and took 7:01 off the clock. Leading the charge on the ground for Crockett were Kendrick Edwards and Michael Aniekwu, who collectively scored three touchdowns and racked up 136 yards. The aforementioned Vaughn hauled in five receptions from Paul Wagner for 88 yards, the first of which came on a circus one handed catch, and a touchdown, all in the first half. Late in the game Kendrick Edwards sustained an ankle injury, the seriousness was unknown. The injury occurred late in the game and allowed the second string running back Joseph Basemore to shine, as he scored from 17 yards out on his very first touch of the night. While Lanier's season comes to an end with Thursday's game, Crockett's continues next week in playoff action as they play David against 4A Goliath Lake Travis (9-0, 5-0). |
